Protect the Affordability of Higher Education
The Republican tax plan is riddled with numerous problems for low-income and middle class Americans, including attacks on the attainability and affordability of higher education. According to the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would cost students an extra $71 billion over the next decade. Under current tax law, students repaying loans can deduct up to $2500 of interest payments from their taxable income. The GOP tax plan eliminates this deduction, used by over 12 million students in 2015, and will lead to borrowers paying an extra $21 billion over the next decade.

The senior vice president of the American Council of Education, Terry W. Hartle, criticized the bill by saying "The biggest losers will be students repaying their education loans, young adults seeking graduate degrees and adults seeking continuing education to upgrade their skills in a rapidly changing labor market." Republicans in Congress need to stop playing partisan games with education and work to make it more attainable for all. - 5 Calls -
