MIT Dept. of Athletics, Physical Education, & Recreation (DAPER) announced on Thursday, May 16th, 2019 that they will be removing their gymnastics facility in the duPont Gymnasium on Monday, July 1st, 2019 in order to build a new, bigger weight training room for their varsity teams.

MIT's gymnastics facility is home to several gymnastics programs, as it is a one-of-a-kind facility in the city. Namely, it hosts the MIT Gymnastics Club, who have been training in the facility since their formation in 2010, after the university cut the Men's and Women's Varsity Gymnastics Teams from their budget. The MIT Gymnastics Club has become a very strong and thriving club on the campus, providing gymnastics opportunities for anyone in the MIT community. They have become a well-known presence in the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) community, and the loss of a training facility will most likely mean the end of the club.

The gym is also the home of Cambridge Community Gymnastics (CCG), a non-profit, community adult gymnastics program that has been operating in the gym since 2008. CCG provides gymnastics classes for anyone over the age of 11, focusing on adult beginner gymnastics. They also have their own all-adult competitive gymnastics Rec Team in the NAIGC, as well as sponsor a Special Olympics gymnastics program as well. CCG also coordinates with several local colleges who have collegiate gymnastics clubs in the NAIGC to give them practice time in the gym as well:

  • Boston University Gymnastics Club - has been training 1-2 times per week in the MIT Gym for over 10 years
  • Simmons College Gymnastics Club - was just added to their programming this year because they were able to get regular practices at the MIT Gym through CCG
  • Brandeis University Gymnastics Club - has members who have trained at CCG for at least four years
  • Tufts University Cheerleading - trained at CCG regularly last year

The MIT gymnastics facility is also the home to the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School's (CRLS) Varsity Gymnastics Team, since CRLS does not have its own gymnastics facility.

Several other MIT groups also utilize the gymnastics facilities at MIT:

  • MIT Cheerleading
  • MIT Diving
  • MIT Pole Vaulting
  • Infinite Diving
  • Boston Area Diving

MIT DAPER cited one of the reasons they picked the Gymnastics Room to be the new location of the varsity weight training room is that it is under-utilized, however this seems like an extremely short-sighted statement given ALL the groups that depend on this facility. Only giving the gymnastics programs who use the gym a six week notice of its demise was at the very least inconsiderate, and in actuality was cold, hard calculated. Please sign this petition to help us show the MIT DAPER Athletic Directors that this gym is actually one its strongest assets, and to so unceremoniously destroy it will not be tolerated. Thank you so much for your support. #SaveGymnasticsAtMIT
