Missouri Western's Res Life: Juda Hall Residents Affected By Beshears Unavailability!
On the day of August 10, 2021, less than 3 weeks before move-ins begin, it was brought to our attention by Missouri Western’s Residential Life that Juda Hall occupants were being forced to relocate to Scanlon Hall, a freshman dormitory, due to a construction site next to/or within Beshears. It was expressed that the University needs more time to refresh our spaces and that Beshears Hall is not available. Res Life stated that there is a 40% difference of occupancy between the dorms, Beshears being at 100% and Juda at 60%. Instead of moving 40% of Beshears residents to Juda to fill in the space unoccupied in Juda, they have decided to relocate every resident in Juda to Scanlon with little to no accommodation.
We the residents of Juda are very confused and concerned at this time because our place of living is affected by construction that’s happening to another dorm site. If Beshears Hall is affected by this predicament, why should Juda Hall occupants be affected? The fair thing to do would be to move 60% of Beshears residents (which shouldn’t be a problem since 60% of Judas residents are being forced to relocate) to Scanlon and move the 40% remaining to Juda, leaving Juda Hall residents unaffected and fill the space that is unattended.
Overall, if you look at both ends of the stick, a fraction of students will be disappointed and/or shorted. Let’s lessen the blow of the unfortunate situation by leaving those unaffected to stay in their original anticipated room assignments that we paid a housing contract fee to reserve.
It would also be highly appreciated that these “higher ups,” (which was also stated by res life), let students have an input on drastic changes like such. This was a huge decision that was made by our University that we trust is supposed to look out for students and be as inclusive as possible.
Our Goals:
A. Relocate those occupants affected (Beshears residents) and keep Juda room assignments unaffected. In simpler terms, since Juda is 60% occupied, fill in the 40% remaining from the Beshears side to fill in the spaces in Juda and keep Juda room assignments unaffected.
B. Reimburse students' housing contract fee since their desired dormitory isn’t available.
C. If push comes to shove, lower the housing cost overall since we are being forced to tolerate a substantially smaller and less convenient dormitory as upperclassmen.
D. Include us (affected on-campus students) in topics like such to prevent an uproar and negative feelings towards living on-campus or the University, overall.
