Why this petition matters

Started by Judith Erickson

I am a single mother of 2 daughters, 16 & 13 years old, very bright & intelligent.  However, I have been having lots of different issues with my 16 year old daughter including running away from home.  She got herself involved with other kids that use drugs and despite talking to her, offering my assistance & professional help, like outpatient therapy and sending her to a boarding school...where I had to work 3 jobs to afford it and pay bills here at home,  she continues in the wrong path.  With running away from home, the first time the police found her, they just brought her home and told her she cannot run away again since she's a minor.  No consequences whatsoever.  The second time she ran away, still not home, she's now been gone for 33 days.  With my 13 years old daughter seeing her sister run away and no consequences, she has followed suite.  She's missing since Friday, 10/2/2020, as I write this petition.  All I hear from my local police and St. Louis Juvenile detective is, "there is nothing else we can do but bring your kids home when we find them.  If they leave again, call the police station and file a report of a missing minor".  I am sure am not the only one suffering with unruly teenagers and I would like the government to be of more assistance and for child runaway to be made a crime in Missouri.  Maybe this would be taken seriously by teens who wants to runaway. The law requires me as a parent to be responsible for my children by taking care of them and providing and if this wouldn't happen, I would face consequences.  Why can't the minors also be held responsible.  Let's make Missouri the 10th state to consider child runaway a crime.
