Not even COVID-19 can stop Mississippi volunteer fire departments from serving their communities. volunteer firefighters are critical to life safety and property safety in rural communities. These brave men and women serve on departments for no pay at departments that provide service to their communities 24 hours 7 days a week. Volunteer Fire Departments are currently facing a decline in membership at most departments. In an effort to attract new member and increase membership, we are petitioning for State of Mississippi to offer free tuition to those who serve their communities and commit to continue to serve for a specified period and time after graduation.

According to the National Fire Protection Associations, 69 percent of firefightersin the U.S. are volunteers. Many small and rural communities across the country feel the pain of declining membership and greater challenges to recruitment and retention. We also know that call volumes in the U.S. have skyrocketed, increasing by 300 percent in the last 30 years, putting more and more demand on local departments.

The men and women who serve as volunteer firefightersput their lives on the line daily. They respond to medical emergencies, fires, drownings, car accidents, they work holidays and weekends, install fire alarms, they train in many cases as much as paid departments, and they do it not only without hazard pay, they do it for FREE. Please tell the Mississippi legislators Volunteer Fire Fighters deserve free college and trade school tuition!
