My name is Lily, I am 17 and my family and I along with close friends decided to have brunch at Miss Shirley's Cafe on Pratt Street in the Baltimore Inner Harbor on 7/6/14. After a 30 minute wait we were finally seated. The first thing we were asked was whether anyone had food allergies and my mom stated I did and had brought my own food as I have many anaphylactic food allergies that make it very unsafe for me to eat food we don't prepare ourselves. The waitress seemed ok with the fact I had my own food and took our drink orders. Shortly after, an assistant manager came to our table to inform us I could not eat my safe food I brought and could either eat food they prepared for me or not eat at all. After protest from my mom insisting there was nothing they could make safe for me, the assistant manager asked for my food allergen list, which my mom wrote down and he went to talk to the chef. A few minutes later he came back to our table and offered me a few things that would be "safe" to eat including bacon, which commonly contains paprika which is one of my food allergies and my mother had written down on the list. I decided I would rather go hungry then risk a trip to the ER or worse. I bring my own food everywhere, to restaurants, sports complexes, and school and this was the first place that has ever told me I couldn't eat my food at their restaurant. In fact, most restaurants are relived that I have my own food and they don't have to worry about making food safe for me. Miss Shirley's Cafe clearly states below their menu "Miss Shirley’s Café cannot guarantee that allergens may not have been introduced during another stage of the food chain process or, even inadvertently, during preparation. We do not have separate kitchens to prepare allergen-free items or separate dining areas for guests with allergies or intolerances. Accommodations for food allergies may not always be possible." On top of this policy they also state, "Outside beverages, food, cakes or balloons may not be brought into or consumed on the premises". If Miss Shirley's cannot guarantee that a patron with food allergies can eat safely at their restaurant then they should allow them to bring their own food. By signing this petition, you are supporting the 15 million Americans with food allergies and their right to dine safely. Please support!
