The dress code rules are unfair to high school students. We are developing into young adults, but how can we discover who we are if we aren’t allowed to wear what we want to wear. Our style choices shouldn’t be up to teachers or principals.

We need to make this a conversation between the students and the adults. It’s been going on too long and we need to work harder to make a change. Wearing a crop top, ripped jeans, or even muscle shirts; should not be a reason for students to be in trouble. There are much more important things that this school district needs to worry about. The way a student dresses should not be one of them.

Think about it… how are ripped jeans disrupting the learning environment? How is a muscle shirt distracting students? None of these is going to hurt the district itself so why should we not be able to wear these pieces of clothing?

What makes it even worse is that your dress code is hurting the students parents. Parents now have to buy students more clothes that fit to the “standards” of the school dress code. Some parents aren’t able to go to the store every weekend just to buy the appropriate clothes for school. There’s bills that need to be paid and the student dress code shouldn’t become one of those bills. The way us students see it; if our parents don’t have a problem with what we’re wearing, why should the school care.

Another problem that we face today is COVID. With COVID cases rising and lowering every other week, it’s not safe to shop either. Yes there’s contactless ways to do things as such, but you have to remember that not everyone is okay with leaving out their homes. Some parents won’t even let their kids leave home because they’re worried about their child’s safety. So shopping for school appropriate clothes is not an option everyone has.

Since the district has their beliefs on why students need the dress code, we should put it to a test. For the first 1 month of school, we should try no dress code. Whatever the students wear, is what they’re wearing. What’s going to determine if it’s a bad idea is without dress code, are students going to get in more trouble. As in skipping school/classes, fights, bad grades, etc. If those incidents rise while not in dress code, then we go back to dress code. If nothing changes, then we get to stay out of dress code and all of these year us students and parents were right.

This is my proposal, all you have to do is sign. Signing this is not a guarantee that it will work. It will however get us noticed so we can soon be acknowledged by the district. Sign with me!!
