Harassment is defined in subsection 10(1) of the (Ontario Human Rights Commission) Code as "engaging in a course of vexatious comment or conduct that is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome.”
Every time a peaceful citizen of London, Ontario is loudly and publicly condemned for engaging in a lawful activity by a street preacher, that citizen's human rights are violated. It would not be tolerated in a workplace and it should not be tolerated on a public street. To be called a whore because you are a woman wearing shorts, to be told you are a murderer because you support freedom of choice or to be called an abomination because of your sexual orientation is deeply disturbing.
This is not an issue of freedom of speech which is the right of every Canadian. It has been said that, "Your right to swing your arms ends just where the other man's nose begins." The street preacher's right to freedom ends where he infringes on other's right to walk the streets of our city without having their clothing, behaviour or stated legal beliefs being condemned loudly over a megaphone.
We call for an end to this type of harassment, for a clear and enforced by-law to protect our rights and enable us to go peacefully about our business without having insults hurled at us on the streets of our beautiful city.
