LSE needs to urgently redirect resources to make Summer re-sits available for postgraduate students, due to the disruption caused by the pandemic. They currently provide re-sits for undergraduates, and so they should extend this to postgraduates in order to provide them the safety net they deserve.

While A Level and GCSE students have had their exams cancelled due to online learning being deemed insufficient for them to complete their studies, university students are still having to go ahead with their January exams next week. They will be marked as if it is a normal academic year, despite the huge disruption they have faced over the past couple of weeks alone.

The announcement of tier changes before Christmas, and then a national lockdown this week has caused enormous challenges. If students travelled home, they now may not have a good study space. If they have children, they now have to teach them as well as themselves. If they work, they may have experienced increased stress and/or a loss of income.

The disruption caused by the announcement of lockdown has caused many LSE students already make the difficult decision to defer their assessments to the next academic year, because Summer re-sits are only available for undergraduate students. If students choose to defer their exams, they are forced to push their graduation back a whole year.

People often underestimate how difficult online learning actually is. It is not as interactive, can be extremely isolating, and does not yield the same amount of understanding as in-person teaching.

Many LSE students feel they are not going to perform as well in their Januray exams as they know they could under normal circumstances. This means some will be prevented from reaching their full academic potential, which lessens the value they gain from the degree.

Lastly, student stress levels are at an all-time high. Many have experienced mental health issues from studying in isolation, and now this anxiety has been drastically heightened by the circumstances. They are facing the unfamiliarity of new online assessment formats which they have never experienced, and the prospect of not performing as well as they could, thus losing value from their degree.

The least LSE can do is provide postgraduate students with the safety net of being able to re-sit assessments in the summer.

This should be relatively easy to arrange logistically, since the exam is now online, so the school will not have to arrange examination rooms of invigilators.

We all want to be given th eopportunity to perform to the best of our ability, something that circumstances caused solely by the Covid-19 crisis has taken away from many of us.

Thank you very much for your time, it is much appreciated!
