Aaliyah Harris started this petition to Minnesota State Senate and

in America, we produced 292.4 million tons of waste in 2018 and the numbers are only going up from there. A majority of products found in the ocean are plastic beverage bottles, cigarette butts, and styrofoam. Most of the people who produce this waste are financially less fortunate. An example of this is the Flint water crisis. They did not have clean drinking water due to the city switching its water resource to the flint river. The water wasn't properly treated and caused sickness in many people. The lack of clean water made people buy a lot of plastic, single-use water bottles. They were using more than 20,000,000 bottles per day.

This carelessness from everyday citizens and the government is affecting the ecosystem because the plastic goes into the local animal's habitats. Because of all of this, the amount of ocean life is decreasing. The fish population is going down because they're intaking so much plastic. This decrease in fish life is ruining the fishing career choice. If we continue to contaminate the ocean all edible fish will be extinct by 2048 and a lot of people will be unemployed.

Not many people know the effect of the constant littering and pollution but if you go to a public park and look around you'll see chip bags, water bottles, plastic bags, etc. Waste and garbage are slowly yet surely contaminating our earth.

our solution... some little things you can do to decrease the pollution of the public are...

  • when shopping, try to bring your own bags. if that's not possible ask for paper instead of plastic
  • go on garbage cleanup walks. when you go on a walk bring gloves and a trash bag and clean up the trash you see.
  • try to find better products that are more environmentally friendly
  • pick up your own garbage when you go out.
  • teach younger generations about the effects of littering
