Marc Michael Gozzi started this petition to Minnesota Governor and

Less than 160 years ago, on December 26th 1862 in Mankato, Minnesota, 36 Lakota men were hanged, by the order of Abraham Lincoln, in the largest mass execution in United States history. Alexander Ramsey, the first Governor of Territorial Minnesota, greatly contributed to miscommunication and animosity between Minnesotans and the Lakota and Ojibwe peoples. Through purposefully mistranslated treaties which he had no intention to uphold, these miscommunications and broken treaties greatly contributed to growing tensions and eventual conflict that led up to the executions.

The name Lakota means “friends or allies” and by changing Ramsey County’s name to Lakota County it would serve as a source of pride for all Minnesotans in our shared history, rather than a daily reminder of bitter history on our capital county.

We are currently dealing with much strife and polarization, right now we need to show we can come together as a state and as human beings. To continue to celebrate a man who sowed division amongst this very state 4 generations ago, demonstrates we won’t be able to do that. The last thing Minnesota currently needs is to celebrate division.

I am now speaking to directly to Governor Walz, you sit in the same in the same chair as a man who caused so much pain amongst a now mostly forgotten people. You now have the choice to make a change to empower the people you swore to serve, the Minnesotan people.
