Marcelina Gonzalez started this petition to Minneapolis Public Schools and

Minneapolis Public School students, especially high school students, have come out and shared their sexual assault and harassment stories involving the same kids go to school with us. There have been over 20+ men called out at ONE high school alone. The school district need to make a public statement about these situations that are affecting a large number of students and recognize what the school could’ve done better. Students who have been traumatized by their own peers deserve better mental health support. At the MSBC(Minneapolis school based clinics), there are usually only TWO mental health workers who do amazing work with the students they work and talk with, but it’s not enough to accommodate over 1,500+ students per school. Thirdly, there needs to be more open conversations about consent and emphasize “yes means YES”. To make this more effective, an example would be to bring in guest speakers who have sexually assaulted or harassed someone and have them talk about the consequences that came with their actions, the same way former addicts talk to students about their mistakes to make sure no one makes the same mistakes.

In conclusion, the district and schools individually should release a statement saying they are aware of this situation. We as students need more mental health resources, two personal psychologists is not enough. Finally, we need to educate students on these topics in different ways to make sure it is engraved in their brains. No student should walk in fear in their own school, especially by their own peers.
