Change the name of Lake Calhoun
This petition had 4,524 supporters
Minneapolis's Lake Calhoun is named after John C. Calhoun, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina who dedicated himself to preserving white supremacy and slavery, and helped lead the push for southern secession and civil war. Calhoun went as far as to call slavery "a positive good." His name and legacy should not be honored anywhere.
In the wake of the tragic white supremacist terrorist attack in Charleston, SC, it is critical that we actively reject white supremacy and all symbols thereof.
While changing the name of a lake will not, in itself, bring an end to injustice, it can and should be an important step in an ongoing effort to confront our nation's past and to end systemic racism and oppression today.
