Stop Marijuana Arrests Now!
This petition had 1,190 supporters
The Minneapolis community is calling upon the Minneapolis City Council to enact a Lowest Law Enforcement Priority of Cannabis ordinance. The passage of this ordinance would guarantee that non-violent cannabis consumers are no longer seen as priority targets of the Minneapolis Police Department. Current policing trends in Minneapolis have produced a staggering racial disparity in arrests with 11 out of every 12 arrests being African-American men and women. Defective policing strategy has greatly restricted these community members access to housing, jobs, and ability continue their education. Successful enactment of this ordinance would free up police resources to pursue violent and property crimes, decongest our court system, vacate our jails of non-violent offenders, and alleviate racially disproportionate arrest rates. In positively responding to this petition the city council will demonstrate it's commitment to a safer Minneapolis as well as reflect the will of Minneapolis residents who do not want to see their community subjugated to draconian and ineffective drug laws.
