Safe, reliable, affordable transportation is critical to the quality of life in Minneapolis. Please embrace new mobile app-based transportation options and welcome ridesharing to our city.
Despite public transit, safe ride programs, and other existing transportation services, people in Minneapolis still lack good options for safe, affordable rides, especially at night. As a woman, I often feel unsafe walking home or waiting on the street for a bus or a cab I am not sure will arrive.
Ridesharing apps show me a picture of my driver and their car, track everything by GPS, and show me exactly when they will get there. They even have a rating system and 24-hour customer service to provide accountability and make sure riders have a great experience.
In cities across the country, including Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington D.C., and many others, ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber now offer safe rides to millions of passengers by connecting background-checked local drivers with people seeking rides through trusted networks. Minneapolis deserves the same.
Our neighbors in St. Paul are already benefitting from ridesharing, but without support from local policymakers, Minneapolis residents can’t share in this innovation.
Parking and traffic congestion also highlight the need to encourage Minneapolis residents to adopt car-free lifestyles and make better use of cars already on city streets.
The city should embrace ridesharing and welcome these apps to Minneapolis to combat drunk driving, reduce road congestion, and improve public safety for people like me.
Please support ridesharing in Minneapolis!
