The abrupt administrative changes at Southwest High School have created chaos and upheaval. Brian Nutter, a beloved, committed, and highly competent administrator must be reinstated.

Mr. Nutter is the homegrown talent our students and community need and deserve. Following his graduation as valedictorian from Roosevelt High School, he enrolled in college to become a teacher at his alma mater. As a Career and Technical Education teacher, he earned his administrator license. In the army, he completed two overseas combat tours, and now serves in the Minnesota Army National Guard. He and his wife, also a Roosevelt graduate, are raising four children who are, and will be, MPS students.

Cultivating respectful and supportive relationships are Nutter’s forte. He is widely sought after for counsel due to his rich experience.  He is appreciated for his follow-through on issues, his foresight in planning, and consistent implementation of restorative justice.  He specifically:

  • Facilitated and supported the student-led Race to Justice days at Southwest, worked closely with student leaders to plan everything from logistics to speakers. Championed positive school wide engagement and equity efforts. Dramatically reduced suspension rates.
  • Worked to grow the concurrent enrollment classes as well as our International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme. Both are a part of CPS plan to increase diverse course options, thereby providing more students with the opportunity to earn college credits prior to graduation.
  • Mentored, and promoted Student Activities.  Was the initial contact, recruited advisors for student suggested clubs/activities, and was a constant presence for Student Activities.  His leadership, support and acceptance were critical to the students’ engagement in Southwest both in activities and academics.
  • Understood in depth complicated school budgets and staffing needs.

In his years at Southwest, Brian Nutter established himself as a valued and successful assistant principal. It takes many years for a principal to work effectively with a community--Mr. Nutter already has three successful years in. As staff and students are returning, it is becoming increasingly clear that Southwest is in need of his expertise. The students, parents, and staff request that Brian Nutter be reinstated at Southwest High School immediately.
