Why this petition matters

Started by Douglas Boulter

Due to the current changes in the highway code, the most vulnerable road users have been given higher priority. This has created a disparity with other road users.

This petition aims to bring equality to all road users. I would like to see it made law that cyclist MUST have safety gear, specifically helmet and lights to ride on the road. I would also like to see it made law that cyclists MUST have some form of public liability insurance.

To be clear, a motorcyclist must have insurance, tax, mot, licence and MUST wear a helmet, a car driver must have insurance, tax, mot, licence and MUST wear a seatbelt. Even horse riders must have safety helmet, suitable protection, and public liability insurance to ride the horse on the public highway.

I feel it is time that cyclists must now adhere to a set LAW which would specify the following: 1- Public liability insurance so in the event of them causing accident or injury to another road user, or damage to a vehicle, there is a way for victims to be compensated. 2- All cyclists intending to utilise the public carriageway must have a bicycle equipped with lights and each cyclist must wear a helmet for protection from injury. 3- Any cyclist not conforming to this must undertake a cycling proficiency test to prove they are a competent and safe road user. 4- similar to tractors, should a queue of traffic exceed a set number of cars, then cyclists must pull over at the next safe space to allow traffic to flow normally. 5- when cycling uphill, cyclists must remain in single file to allow vehicles to pass safely (as this will avoid additional strain on engines which will only increase carbon emissions)

Please support my petition and lets make the highways a safe and fair place for all road users.
