  •       Employment of Indian seafarers on merchant ships                   trading in                       War and Piracy zones

Indian seafarers are today employed on many Foreign flag Merchant ships belonging to reputed Ship owners and ship managers.
Lately it has become a serious concern for the families of the seafarers when the seafarer is made to serve On board, even trading in Piracy stricken areas.
Many shipping companies hold seafarers indirectly under compulsion and fear of dent in their career and continued employment of Indian seafarers, if the individuals declined to serve while their vessels are to operate in ports of Piracy.   What kind of justifiable compensation for even those willing to serve on board, in such circumstances endangering their personal safety and their family welfare, is unknown and unregulated.

It is notable that reputed professional Bodies such as MAASA/FOSMA/ MUI/ INSA/IUSF, company of Master Mariners/ IMarE, adminstrative flag stae Authority (Dir General of Shipping)are showing  concern towards  adequate follow up to secure safe rescue of seafarers fallen as hostage in the hands of pirates.
It is stressed that in the absence of proper protection for Indian seafarers' safety, all active professional and Administrative Authorities should take renewed efforts and review the safety and wellbeing of our Indian seafarers employed in foreign flag merchant ships who trade into these most dangerous regions.
Also it is emphasised that shipowners and ship managers must treat the options expressed by their employees, without prejudice, when some seafarers do not wish to sail on board vessels calling on unsafe ports of trade. Whenever crew join these vessels sailing to potentially dangerous waters, clearly expressed conditions must be explained, before securing their willingness to join the vessels.

The other option left for seafaring personnel is to outrightly decline to sail on  such vessels, and companies should assure that their unwillingness will not in any way affect their career while in employment.
