I run a family-owned small business that specializes in the manufacturing and export of plastic houseware products. Covid has been challenging for all businesses and individuals - We are one of them. Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a steep rise in freight being charged by various shipping companies. During the Pre - Covid times, the export freight for a container going to the United States was below $2000. However now, this has grown by 500% to $10,000 and above. Even with such sky-high prices, there is no confirmation of getting the shipment slot.

As I mentioned, every business has suffered during the pandemic but a rise of 500% in freight prices cannot be warranted. Such high pricing is going to eventually lead to the collapse of a large number of businesses that export products just like us. This creates a domino effect. Reduction in exports from small businesses will lead to a drop in foreign currency coming into the country, hence leading to more problems with our economy.

While communicating with the shipping companies, we're told that there is no space available on any vessel. If this is the case, the shipping companies would be making good money, even in such tough times. Why is there yet such a steep increase in the pricing? While the shipping companies stay alive and flourish for the moment, the small businesses and exporters will be the ones drowning. The entire Indian Economy will suffer due to the greed and rampant profiteering of a few shipping companies.

IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT WILL GO A LONG WAY IN STABILISING THE SITUATION!
