Save Nature Movement started this petition to Dr. Rashmi Kamal (District Magistrate,Paschim Medinipur,West Bengal) and

TREES OVER THREE HUNDRED YEARS OLD BEING CHOPPED FOR ROAD  EXPANSION PROJECT!

Many trees of over hundreds of years old are being chopped for the Temakhani-Potashpur road project in Sabang block of West Midnapore district, West Bengal.  These trees are very important for the locals as they serve a variety of purposes. These trees provide shelter to birds, flowers, fruits and its branches, leaves and flowers are often used as medicines in Ayurveda for the locals there and people from far-off places too.

Due to the huge benefits of these trees the locals want to save the trees. The people have already submitted the demand to the local authorities and the engineering department working about this. They have specially requested not to cut the few trees that are over hundreds of years old and very important for the locals there.

The road construction work can go on without cutting the trees as had been done in many cases. Few years ago, the Jessore road movement have proved that if people stand up then justice for trees can be achieved. Road expansion work has been done successfully at Jessore Road without cutting the trees. The same should be implemented here keeping in mind the huge benefits we are getting from those trees.

Save Nature movement at Sabang in Midnapore is also pro-active about this. They have held strikes, hung  posters on trees, made public awareness and demanded to authorities to spare the trees. They have submitted the complaint to the authorities and are  also holding online awareness via email and twitter storms  to reach out to those in power.

The local have also said they will try their utmost in saving the trees. To them the trees are Holy , the trees are  important and they have felt the need to conserve the trees. So this deforestation should be stopped immediately and alternative methods explored and if totally necessary then the Transplantation of these trees should be arranged by the Administration instead of cutting and throwing them away.

So come forward and support us in saving these century-old  trees from reckless, unnecessary deforestation.
