Why this petition matters

Started by Raviteja G

Usually in the city, people don’t cover long distances on two-wheelers.As far as the city roads are concerned, I think there is no need for helmets while riding a bike. Helmets should be made compulsory on highways, not on the city roads.

police had set a speed limit of 40 km per hour in all areas of cities. So, there is no scope to drive fast. Commuters feel that the rule should be scrapped as the main cause of head injuries is bad roads. “If there is no provision to drive fast, there is no possibility of fatal accidents. We have signals for every 500 meters and vehicles will not be able to cross 40 km per hour on an average.

We are only opposing helmet compulsion on arterial roads and local roads in the city. Often people don’t travel for more than a kilometre to drop their children to schools, for purchasing grocery and other sundry things and on such occasions, the helmet compulsion becomes a burden. In fact we are supporting compulsion of helmet on state as well as national highways and we are ready to create awareness in this regard.

If a person does not wear helmet, he/she is not causing any trouble to traffic or other commuters. Wearing a helmet is safety precaution. I respect that and it should be left as a safety guideline only. It should not be made a law. Making helmets compulsory is against basic notion on freedom. Wearing a helmet is very uncomfortable, especially to observe the other vehicles in Indian city traffic.

I request the city police departments to consider these local needs while implementing the court guidelines on compulsion of helmets as very few people have died due to head injuries while riding on the arterial roads.

Hence, there is no need of helmet compulsion on these roads, and should be made optional inside the city.
