Public Interest Appeal by Noor Dasmesh Singh, a Chandigarh based Architect & Urbanist (NOOR Architects Consultants)

1.       The flyover proposed will connect Zirakpur to Tribune Chowk, Chandigarh. It is a central spine that connects Chandigarh with New Delhi on the NH 44. Quick points to consider before such grave mistake is carried out.  

2.       About 700 fully mature trees of rare ‘Arjan’ and ‘Mango’ are being earmarked for being axed to make way for this urban monstrosity

3.       Urban Design ideas (to explore alternate solutions) should be exhaustively explored before decision of such magnitude is taken.The flyover itself is not going to solve the basic problem of congestion at this busy bottleneck

4.       Being an Architect and Urban Planner, we can say that constructing a fly over in such a scenario is not be of much good over long term

5.       ‘Nobody is anti-development’. It is just common-sensical to say that fully grown trees (that too) 700 of them should be saved at any cost especially when we are going to be investing in a project that at the outset is not convincing neither the architectural / design fraternity nor the common citizens of Chandigarh tri-city

6.       Please constitute an expert committee consisting of architects, planners and prominent concerned citizens of the tri-city to re-examine the idea and GIVE IT A  CHANCE to make an attempt to save hundreds of trees. A participatory process of stakeholders must be followed to engage citizens and professionals before decision of such magnitude & nature is taken 

7.       Environment awareness is at an all-time high- still we are contemplating axing so many trees ?

8.       Let us all get together and see if we can save our Chandigarh’s trees and save the environment. Let’s join hands and show our strength to short-sighted vision of few !
