1. Workers are being underpaid.
Singapore employees have the highest expected turnover in Asia Pacific where forty-six percent are likely to leave their job within a year. The main ‘push factors’ that plays a part in their decision to switch job are career prospects (16%), being underpaid (15%) and not enjoying the work they do (13%). For example, the security sector. Despite government’s effort of implementing the Progressive Wage Model, many workers felt that they were being underpaid considering the long working hours, the nature of the job that is perceived as both physically and mentally strenuous while enduring the tough working conditions such as the harsh weather and the constant overtime due to shortage of manpower. In addition to this, younger workers felt that they could not find enjoyment in their job. Yet, despite all of this, they only earned a salary of $1,100. This shows that on top of not getting their desired career prospect and not enjoying their work, they are being underpaid.
Another example would be the migrant workers in Singapore. For many migrants, their purpose of working in Singapore is to provide a better living for their families in their home country. Yet, they were unable to do so. These migrants sometimes went on for months without being paid at all but for most of the time, they were being underpaid. Considering the fact that these things are happening to migrants, what makes you think it's not happening to Singaporeans today too?
2. Number of Homeless people are increasing.
The common occupations among these people are cleaners and security guards.This serve as a reminder to us that homeless people does not necessarily refer to people who are jobless but also people who have a job yet faces housing instability due to their low wage.
