Disha Mundra started this petition to Ministry of labour and employment and

The minimum wage is a type of price floor implemented by the government. Defined by the International Labor Organization (ILO), “Minimum wages are the minimum amount of remuneration that an employer is required to pay wage earners for the work performed during a given period, which cannot be reduced by collective agreement or an individual contract.”

The sole purpose of a minimum wage is to protect the workers in the labour force especially in the unorganised sector by creating a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees. It is to ensures just and equitable shareof progress to all contributing to the growth and development of the economy. In addition, it also helps alleviating poverty and reduce the disparity in distribution of income which is one of the governments macroeconomic agendas.

It is quite shocking to know that the minimum wage in India set by the ministry of labour and employment is Rs.47 per hour equalling to USD 0.66 per hour. However, developing countries like Hong Kong has set the minimum wage of USD 4.44 per hour, Japan with USD 8.18 per hour and Germany with USD 10.74 per hour. I strongly believe that India has the capacity to increate this meagre wage as the country climbs the ladder of economic growth.

The unorganised in India comprises of almost 90% of the labour workforce and contributes to almost 50% of India’s current GDP. But the minimum wage set by the Indian government is extremely low, in fact it is quite heart wrenching to know that this minimum wage can only support the workers with the day’s meal, defeating the sole purpose of a min. wage to protect their well-being. Labourers coming from the informal sector of the workforce need to sustain their families while going through all the blood, sweat and tears hence have the right to deserve a living wage. Increasing the minimum wage would have dramatic effects on the poverty levels in India as the major workforce would earn higher wages. To tackle the high labour costs the government can segregate the minimum wage levels in cities and rural areas.

Join me in asking the Ministry of Labour and Employment to issue and enforce a rise in minimum wage to a #Livingwage
