Zoe Pickering started this petition to Ministry of Justice

I am autistic and I know how difficult it can be to survive in a world designed for non-autistic people. I have also been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and was taken to an adolescent psychiatric unit. This was very much like a prison. There were lots of restrictive rules and I found it absolutely unbearable. It would be so much worse to be in prison where the rules are much harsher. Autistic people like me find can find it incredibly hard to have to follow rules that they don’t understand the need for.

Putting autistic people in prisons can worsen any coexisting mental health problems and may leave them vulnerable to self-harm and suicide. I’ve talked to prison doctors who confirm what a distressing situation this can be for such people, who may not even understand why they’ve been put in prison in the first place.

I’m calling for the Ministry of Justice to ensure that the prison service makes  adequate provision for autistic prisoners, including specialist autism units where necessary. Spread the word of this petition. Tell friends, share on social media and do anything else you can. Please help to make a harsh place more bearable for people like me.
