Horrifying Pictures of the loss
The Seemanchal region of Bihar comprises of Districts like Kishanganj, Katihar, Purnea and Araria. These areas witness natural calamities in the form of deadly floods every year. Every year lakhs of people are displaced and incur the loss of both lives and property. The state government is not keen on mitigation plan which is evident from the fact that nothing substantive has been done to stop this recurring problem.
This year, 2017 all the districts of Seemanchal got adversely affected due to the ruthless strike of the flood. Kishanganj and Araria town got submerged in the town creating a deadlock in communication channels. The condition of villages is worrisome. Many villages have been washed away. Hundreds of people lost their lives till date and many are missing. The toll is expected to increase.
The villages in Katihar and Purnea are facing huge trouble. Few villages in Katihar has submerged completely. The inhabitants are compelled to take shelter on higher lands. They are displaced. There is a shortage of food. Because road connectivity has also come to stand still, people can't go to near by areas for various purposes like medical treatment.
Due to heavy currents in the stream of water, the railway connecting North-East states to the rest of India has also stopped. Many pools in this region are in danger level and many have broken. So, all the trains have been cancelled. The plight of commuters is horrendous. People are stuck without resources and this entire scenario is worrisome.
Connectivity to North Eastern states on Halt
Although currently the current of water in Kishanganj has abated and water is receding, now the next trouble would come in the form of availability of food and rampant disease. This would risk more lives.
The media coverage is very narrow and electronic media is hardly interested in the coverage. Not even an hour of a slot is being given to such horrifying calamity in mainstream national media. Few national English dailies have tried to bring attention but their covering lacks dimension.
Bihar flood situation worsens (First Post)
Officials are trying to control the damage but the effort is not enough. It requires huge force and capital. District administration with limited resources can't do much. The region is in need of multi dimensional support. This support would only be possible with the declaration of this region as National Calamity Zone.
I request Ministry of Home Affairs and Government of India along with State Government of Bihar to look into this matter.
