Why this petition matters

Started by Dr. Kartik Chadaar

Recently there have been hugely misleading reports by media houses in India about the Sushant Singh Rajput Case which has spread too much misinformation about mental health.

It is a matter under police investigation but it has already faced media trial and media investigation. Whether he was suffering from mental health issues or not is to be decided by the investigating team.

But the media channels, most recently on Times Now, Navika Kumar showed a 6 month old "exclusive", 5 second video of SSR and went on to conclude that he wasn't suffering from any mental health issues. He was not depressed and seemed happy from his facial expressions. Then from the twitter handle @TimesNow, similar views were tweeted. Here's the Link:

I urge that such blatant misinformation about mental health be taken down and action be initiated against the perpetrators. Also ensure that no future incidents of media houses downplaying mental health occur. Little do they know about the medical and scientific aspects of depression but are freely spreading misinformation about it. It is unfair to the approximately 200 million Indians who suffer from mental health issues and only a handful get treated correctly.

800,000 people die due to suicide every year. Depression is the single largest contributor to global disability (2015).

TLDR:

1. Depression doesn't show on face as Navika Kumar from Times Now claims.

2. A depressed person can look, act and appear happy and smiling.

3. A 5 second video clip from 6 months ago is not a diagnostic tool for depression.
