Prathima shenoy started this petition to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and

I was reading the plight described by a manual scavenger on the page of Humans of Bombay.  It was heart wrenching to read how they get into the pit of filth with no proper gear in place. They often fall ill due to the gases they inhale and the stench is beyond endurance. There are still people doing such jobs for a pittance. Ironically, the job to unclog the drains which is so paramount is taken for granted.

In today's mechanized age of Robotics and AI, can there not be a solution to substitute such jobs so that the manual scavengers do not have to jump neck deep into the pit . Everytime they are in the pit they risk their lives unsure whether they would come alive. The muck , the stench , the uncertainty   the insecurity makes all other things frivolous

I only hope there is some change in the way these jobs are handled. Every human has the right to be treated with dignity and definetely people who are doing a service which cannot be done away with. Hope  technology advances into this field like it has in many other fields .

I appeal to the Ministry to take this matter which requires immediate attention and solution. One of the solutions being  rehabilitation of these workers to earn a sustainable livelihood . I also appeal to the responsible citizens to support my petition.
