Family nowadays are made up of nucleus family living independently in the city, usually made up of mom, dad and kids. Extended family ie grandparents, uncles, aunties live far away in the village or overseas.

As the family progressed so does their age, the parents become old and frail and their kids armed with a degree of diploma often have to make the ultimate choice: career or taking care of their elderly parents. As an example, I would like to share my brother’s struggle. He graduated the top of his class way back in 2005, he got a first class honors degree in Computer Science from UTM Skudai. At that time I (his sister) was already working as a government servant. That year my dad who was still alive was often sick and my brother who was also a JPA scholarship recipient had to make the ultimate sacrifice to not start his career because someone had to take care of our sick dad. Years past and after our dad passed away in 2010, my mom fell into a deed sadness and became clingy, again my brother had to postpone his dream as by 2011 I was working in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Fast forward to 2018, my mom gathered her strength and finally agreed to let my brother find work as I work near the home now. To our dismay the economy wasn’t doing well, far too may new graduates have entered the pool and jobs are scarce plus my brother have aged by 10 years compared to other fresh graduates. Coupled by the feeling of regret and angst, he battled depression and the feeling of uselessness. As his sister, I felt guilty because I have a career and he doesn’t because he sacrificed for the family.

I’m sure many of you out there know someone out there who put his or her family first and sacrificed him or herself from having a career and trying to make ends meet. I wish the government could put aside a budget for these people with heart of gold as the elderly if left without care could cost the government more in terms of medicine subsidy, infrastructure rebuilding, accidents mitigation and more. The elderly were the ones pioneering the building of Malaysia in their younger years. Please empathize and sign this petition to get the MOF and MWFCD attention.
