The 52,318th gentleman cadet passed out of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, as on July,2012. The IMA is one the most prestigious institutions of the country that trains men of the highest caliber, honor and courage. Many of these men sacrifice their lives for their countrymen expecting only honor in return.
Dr.N.K.Kalia, Capt. Saurabh Kalia's father has been waiting for 13 years for his son's share of honor. In the 1999 Kargil war, Lt.Kalia was taken as a prisoner of war along with 5 others by the Pakistani army. 22 days later, their mutilated body was returned to their parents. Eyes had been carved out, cigarette marks covered what was left of their body, limbs cut, private organs removed, lips cut, nose chipped and much more, all ante-mortem. Finally, a bullet to their forehead put them out of their misery.
This is important not just for the family members of the soldiers but to every human being who believes in humanity. The treatment meted out to these brave soldiers is a symbol of shame not just for the Indian government (who is continually ignoring this case) but to all of us, who by remaining silent, have decided not to respect those who die for us. Its important because I am sure, none of us have imagined dying this way and neither did they. Its important because its about being human.
