Stop Mekedatu project and revive Bangalore lakes

This petition had 182 supporters

Karnataka is on the verge of constructing a balancing reservoir at Mekedatu, to supply drinking water to Bangalore.  The estimated cost - 5192 crores. 37 crores additional to be paid to KPTCL for Shivasamudram project's doom. And the cost of setting up a new power project.

Environmental impact - usurp 4999 acres of revenue and forest land and submerge Shivasamundram hydro electric power project.

70 or more lakes in Bangalore which are dying. Cost of rejuvenating and maintaining the lakes - 400 Crores. BBMP, BDA, LDA, Government have no money to rejuvenate the lakes.

It is simple arithmetic and logical thinking. When the lakes can be rejuvenated at a much lesser cost and much shorter time, why the need for a colossal project like the Mekedatu project which is detrimental to the environment and also will submerge Asia's first hydro electric project.  Our water resources minister goes a step further and says that he submerged hydro electric project will be replaced with another new power project. Which means another few hundred or thousand crores of tax payer's money and more damage to environment.

I request the NGT, Ministry of Environment and all environmentalists to intervene and stop this project. Instead, let Bangalore focus on rejuvenating the lakes and also ensuring that rain water harvesting is implemented in every concrete structure.
