Take action to support renewable energies in Trinidad & Tobago

In T&T, we have limited steady supplies fossil fuel resources remaining (estimated 10-15 years, if so much). What will happen when that runs out? Meanwhile, we have an abundance of sun and wind which can create solar and wind energy. If T&T switches to renewables for local energy use, the fossil fuels we normally produce but consume locally can instead be sold abroad, resulting in estimated cost savings of 60% per barrel of oil or BTU of natural gas - which is currently expense to our national budget in the form of an energy subsidy.

To support the growth and development of the renewable energy industry we can: change legislation and systems to facilitate homeowners implementing solar panels including feedback into the grid; provide subsidies for renewable energy businesses and remove VAT tariffs to encourage home installations; and carry out large scale national projects to produce wind and solar energy locally.

Every barrel of oil or BTU of natural gas which we do not use locally means calculable savings for T&T which can add up to millions of dollars. These resources can instead be sold abroad at international market prices. Additionally, such policies and projects in T&T could stimulate a new green economy, create many new jobs in all sectors, and put us on the world map as a progressive ecological destination, promoting tourism as well.
