Equal opportunities in education for non-Bumiputera students
Despite the fact that we are all living in the 21st century, we still have a non-Bumiputera colleague who has excellent grades but is unable to get placement in the education sector. From the perspective of many Malaysians who believe that the vestiges of discrimination have disappeared, affirmative action now provides an unfair advantage to non-Bumiputera. From the perspective of those who deal with the consequences of continuous discrimination on a daily basis, affirmative action is required to protect opportunities that might otherwise be lost if an affirmative obligation to act fairly did not exist. Even in 2019, 90% of public education seats were reserved for the Bumiputera, whilst only 10% was given to other Malaysian races.
It is time for Malaysia to have a fair public education system. We demand the attention of the ministry of education in Malaysia.
1. Increase the number of non-Bumiputera seats in public universities by changing the 90:10 quota system to a more proportionate amount depending on each race's population size.
2. Regardless of race, prioritize B40 and M40 applications. Every Malaysian, regardless of their background, has the right to an education. Poverty reduction was one of the goals of the National Economic Policy. A similar formula should be applied and enforced for the non-Bumiputera as many are also in poverty.
4 . Increase the number of scholarships accessible to non-Bumiputeras across the world.
One argument against increasing the 10% quota for non-Bumiputera citizens is that many of them are 'financially well-off' and can afford to go to private institutions.
This isn't the case. In 2015, the Indian community had 41.31% of M40 citizens, and
38.71% B40 citizens. The Chinese community on the other hand had 42.32% of M40 citizens and 28.02% of B40 members. It is not a far-off assumption that this number is either the same or worse ever since the COVID-19 pandemic.
*More proof and transparency are needed on the vetting and approval process for public institution applications.
