The Dass Trace Youth Empowerment Committee (DTYEC) is a NGO committed to the sustainable and holistic development of youth within Enterprise through our education and sport programmes. We focus on our community’s most vulnerable but precious assets; children between the ages of 4-18.
We endeavour to provide a safe and secure environment that is conducive to learning so we can successfully carry out our initiatives dedicated to academic development. However, we lack the facilities necessary to house such programmes. Our need is dire since it has become increasingly challenging to attain our goal to maximize the academic potential of our community’s youth.
Our current space is a locker room at a pavilion located at the Dass Trace Recreational Grounds. The space is extremely small, cramped and overheated but in spite of the uncomfortable settings, the kids always show up to participate in classes. The children are eager to learn and we match their enthusiasm with our passion and dedication to teach.
We have tried through various means to attain permission to use an Early Childhood Care and Education Centre built a mere stone’s throw away from the dilapidated amenities we are currently occupying but to no avail. The centre was built almost 3 years ago but has never been in use; and for all intents and purposes is abandoned. The centre has become overgrown with weeds and after a recent police raid, it was discovered that the criminal entity has been using the centre to store drugs and ammunition.
Enterprise does not have a community centre and we lack the financial means to rent a facility to achieve our organizational goals. As such, we are appealing to the relevant authorities for permission to temporarily use the centre so our kids can learn in a comfortable, safe and secure environment.
