On the eve of Jamaica's emancipation day, the Jamaican High Court ruled that schools have a right to ban dreadlocks. Education Minister Karl Samuda refused to comment on the issue. This is a petition to demand he take a solid stance so that the Jamaican people can know where his commitment to equal access to education lies.

Background:

Jamaicans have long used the Rastafarian 'aesthetic' to reel in tourists. Yet within the society, discrimination against our own people who wear dreadlocks persists under the pretence that this hairstyle is 'unkempt' and 'dirty'. This is an insult to the rights our ancestors fought so hard to achieve and sets the precedent for discrimination against people based on a hairstyle.

Help to end this hypocrisy and ensure ALL Jamaicans can get access to education without a school's discriminatory and baseless policy about hairstyle getting in the way.
