I had been to Tirupathi. I could find most of the Hotels sell Drinking water more than MRP. The MRP is 20/- They sell to the extent of Rs.40/- When I questioned they were arrogant and insulted me.It is a violation of Packed Commodities Act. The Consumer Protection Act has a provision to seek compensation and to make them pay heavy penalty to Consumer Welfare Fund. For selling Redbull 75/-more than MRP the Airport shop had to pay Rs.50/- lakhs to consumer welfare fund. I gave a notice. They cite a Delhi High Court Judgement (2007), that justifies hotels selling at excessive rate for the ambiance of the place. This unacceptable. For the ambiance and service hefty charges are being levied for the food and other items that are being served. For example the price of Curd Rice would go up to Rs.900/-. Let them do that as there is no law to define the price of food served or service offered. But the Packed Commodity Act should be uniform to all. If they are allowed to sell quoting the ambiance then even a petty shop can keep flower vase spray some perfume and sell commodities more than MRP. Such hotels don't tell ahead that they are selling such products more than MRP. It is not in the menu card. You realize only on getting the bill. Kindly sign a petition to the Minister Shri Ram Vilas Paswan to bring the necessary provisions to stop such illegal practice.
