Oct 17, 2015 — My name is Gustavo Huchín Cauich and I am a mayan beekeeper in the Hopelchen County in the State of Campeche.
I am terribly worried because in the next days the Supreme Court will decide if they do or do not allow MONSANTO
to grow transgenic soy in my community. If this happened, it would put an end to our way of life and our survival.
Just 18 months ago, we, men and women beekeepers from the Yucatan Peninsula, won a historic victory against
MONSANTO and its ally SAGARPA (Ministry of Agriculture), when federal judges went for us denying them the permit to grow transgenic soy
in our territory.
However, the enterprise and the federal government impugned this decision and the legal process was taken to
the National Supreme Court of Justice which will give a definite solution in the next few days.
Growing transgenic soy seriously affects Beekeepng, a historical and traditional practice of mayan people and goes against
our right to live in a healthy environment because of the excessive and unreasonable use of pesticides and the
deforestation it implies. It has been now tens of thousands of jungle hectares chopped down to grow this transgenic
soy. Our jungle, the last jungle that remains in our Country!
In addition to that, the growing of transgenic soy requires the use of a pesticide called Glifosate, classified in 2015
as a concerous agent by the World Health Organization. It is also harmful for bees and contaminates our soil
and water supplies. During this year, we have witnessed how the soy producers are mostly big enterprises
from outside which have increased the use of pesticides spraying them by plane risking the people and bees health.
HELP AND SUPPORT US by signing this petition and sharing it with your friends so that the National Supreme
Court definitely cancels the permits SAGARPA awarded MONSANTO to grow transgenic soy, putting an end to
our way of life and survival.
