We say NO to the proposed revoking of sanctuary zones in the Batemans Marine Park

The Nature Coast Marine Group and many local townsfolk have been  dismayed by the recent announcement by Minister Marshall that the full protection of fish life in five of the Sanctuary zones in our Batemans Marine Park will henceforth be revoked. With some form of recreational fishing to be allowed around all of Montague Island, Brou Lake, Nangudga Lake and in both Clarks Bay-Freshwater Bay and Forsters Bay in Wagonga Inlet.  This decision has been made without the required 2-month public consultation period, with no advice from the Batemans Marine Park Advisory Committee or any other public consultation apart from private discussions with local recreational fishers. This means the previous 19% of the Batemans Marine Park environment that was fully protected will be reduced, impacting fish populations in general and in particular endangered grey nurse sharks at Montague Island and endangered black cod in Wagonga Inlet. This will also increase the encroaching urchin barrens on Montague Island and deplete the fish nurseries in the estuaries that were protected to boost fish populations in other areas. Please help us let them know that we say NO!
