We ask the ministry for education, culture and science (OCW) and of the national association of universities (VSNU) to agree on a mandatory pass / fail grading system for all courses in the second semester of 2019/2020 at all Dutch universities.

This measure is aimed at helping students and staff to cope with the stress, anxiety, pressure and the novel circumstances they are experiencing due to the Corona crisis.

Many students are in situations marked by extreme uncertainty: many have lost their income, feel stranded or isolated or overall overburdened due to these difficult times. Another aspect which needs to be taken into consideration pertains to the different material background of students. Due to the closing of all public studying facilities, students are forced to now work at home. Yet, the conditions for proper home studying are not equal. Some disadvantaged students might not have a private space for studying or live in a space which is generally disadvantageous for proper studying. These are circumstances which lead to inequality and complicate the possibility of grading fairly. Expecting excellence under these conditions would not just be unfair and unrealistic, rather, it would be truly unjust and inhumane. As long as our society is marked by crisis, it is our responsibility as universities to alleviate stress however we can. One way of doing this is the introduction of a pass / fail system. Therein, a pass would not count to their final average, while a student that failed would receive multiple chances for resits. 

Lecturers at Dutch universities have been under a considerable amount of stress as well. In addition to family and parental duties, they are forced to familiarize themselves with new forms of teaching and online tools. To many, these are novel methods which demand a significant amount of time to master. Furthermore, they too worry about their own health and that of those close to them. Expecting these teachers now to be as rigorous in their grading is not justified. Enabling them to make the judgement between pass or fail, allows them to both secure the learning outcomes of their courses, as well as free up some much needed headspace. 

To be sure, these are extraordinary demands. Yet, they reflect the nature of the time we find ourselves in. We ask the minister to show compassion and understanding for the students and teachers of this country. We ask the association of universities to come together as one and protect its community nationwide. We also ask this country to set an example for the global academic community.

We vragen het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (OCW) en De Vereniging van Universiteiten (VSNU) om voor alle vakken in het tweede semester van 2019/2020 aan alle Nederlandse universiteiten een verplicht pass / fail-beoordelingssysteem in te voeren.

Deze maatregel is bedoeld om studenten en medewerkers te helpen beter te kunnen omgaan met de stress, angst, druk en de nieuwe omstandigheden die zij door de coronacrisis ervaren.

Veel studenten bevinden zich in situaties die gekenmerkt worden door extreme onzekerheid: velen hebben hun inkomen verloren, voelen zich gestrand of geïsoleerd of in het algemeen overbelast door deze moeilijke tijden. Een ander aspect waarmee rekening moet worden gehouden, betreft de verschillende achtergrond van studenten. Door het sluiten van alle openbare studiefaciliteiten moeten studenten nu thuiswerken. De voorwaarden voor adequuate thuisstudie zijn echter verre van gelijk. Sommige studenten hebben misschien geen privéruimte om te studeren, of wonen in een ruimte die over het algemeen nadelig is voor een goede studie. Dit zijn omstandigheden die tot ongelijkheid leiden en de mogelijkheid tot eerlijke beoordeling bemoeilijken. Het verwachten van excellentie onder deze omstandigheden zou niet alleen oneerlijk en onrealistisch zijn, maar ook onrechtvaardig en onmenselijk. Zolang onze samenleving gekenmerkt wordt door een crisis, is het onze verantwoordelijkheid als universiteiten om stress zoveel mogelijk te verlichten. Een manier om dit te doen is de introductie van een “pass / fail”-systeem. Daarin zou een "pass" niet meetellen voor hun eindcijfergemiddelde, terwijl een student die het examen niet heeft gehaald meerdere kansen krijgt voor herkansingen.

Ook docenten aan Nederlandse universiteiten staan ​​onder grote druk. Naast familie- en ouderplichten worden ze gedwongen om vertrouwd te raken met nieuwe vormen van lesgeven en online tools. Voor velen vergen deze nieuwe methoden veel tijd om goed onder de knie te krijgen. Bovendien maken ook zij zich zorgen over hun eigen gezondheid en die van hun familie. Het is niet gerechtvaardigd om te verwachten dat deze docenten nu nog dezelfde tijd en ruimte hebben om hun beoordeling te maken. Door ze in staat te stellen het oordeel te maken tussen “pass” of “fail”, kunnen ze zowel de leerresultaten van hun vakken veiligstellen als wat broodnodige mentale ruimte vrijmaken.

Dit zijn zeker buitengewone eisen. Toch weerspiegelen ze de aard van de tijd waarin we ons bevinden. We vragen de minister om medeleven en begrip te tonen voor de studenten en docenten van dit land. We vragen de VSNU om als één samen te komen en haar academische gemeenschap landelijk te beschermen. We vragen dit land ook om een ​​voorbeeld te zijn voor de wereldwijde academische gemeenschap.
