Denmark surprisingly closed down even its world renowned peace research institute (COPRI) a decade ago, so this move appears also to be a real danger. Of course educating Danish youth for unemployment would not be a morally defensible position, but apparently this is not a problem in Asian studies in this time and age? The petition does not take up this aspect, however; it is only about preserving the institutions, and thus it's argument could have been written better. Anyway, I have seen interesting studies on Korea from Copenhagen, and would like to see the stream to continue.

Without the strength of the Humanities, education is incomplete. Context, human context, is critical for all pursuits especially on a globe filled with an expanding population and methods of interaction. How can any professional act in a professional manner without some understanding of its participants, clients, their needs, history and development, or context?

I co-directed a humanities program at a university. We need the arts: literature, music, dance, visual arts, to feed our spirit and nurture our creativity.

It would not only be a pitty to sacrifice "small" subjects of the humanities due to budgetary considerations, but also something very short-sighted. After all, it is not numbers that determine the relevance of knowledge and so I strongly support this petition.

Academic institutions should not be streamlined according to market oriented principles. Knowledge itself is not something that can be measured in terms of market share return profitability standards. If knowledge gets lost, it cannot be easily restored.

The humanities provide critical skills for students; the ability to think about issues from multiple perspectives, reasoning skills that derive from reading, discussion and writing, and the capacity to place social issues in broader context. It is difficult to quantify the impact of these skills, which makes it easy to argue for cutting the humanities. I urge you to give Danish students the message that you encourage careful thought and reflection, the hallmark of the humanities.
