Redhills Action Against Mining started this petition to Minister Richard Bruton and

We wish to object to the granting of a Prospecting Licence to Great Glen Resources in the Redhills area of Co. Cavan.

1. The short response period over the Christmas and New Year holidays does not allow the public to exercise their rights under the Aarhus Convention to full information and consultation.

2. Prospecting should not be allowed in any Special Protection Areas (SPAs) or Special Areas of Conservation (SACs): Upper Lough Erne SPA (Site Code: UK9020071); Upper Lough Erne SAC (Site Code: UK0016614); Lough Oughter & Associated Loughs SAC (Site Code: 000007); Lough Oughter SPA (Site Code: 004049). These areas are supposed to be protected by way of their special designations.

3. Prospecting presents risks to streams, rivers and water supplies because of the use of flocculants and drilling fluids.

4. Prospecting affects the visual amenity of an area as temporary roads would be made across fields, bogs and mountains to enable drill rigs to be transported for making boreholes.

5. Flora and fauna would be damaged or killed by prospecting.

6. Land in Cavan is mainly used for agriculture and this would be put at risk as the noise and dust from drilling would affect animals. Furthermore, the impact of pollution on water sources would be detrimental for agriculture.

7. Tourism would also be affected as no one would want to visit a potential mining site. The area is part of the Cavan-Fermanagh UNESCO “Marble Arch Global Geopark Heritage Site”, which includes the Castle Saunderson Site, an internationally funded site with cross-border activities.

8. The Minister who proposes to grant the Prospecting Licence is the same Minister who went to a mining Conference in Toronto in March 2019 and invited mining companies to Ireland. Surely this is a conflict of interest that should not be allowed.

9. Finally, from experience elsewhere, we know that Prospecting leads to mining and this would be totally unacceptable here. We note that Great Glen Resources applied for 4 Prospecting Licences in Co Donegal in June 2019 and the people of Donegal successfully stopped them. The people of Cavan do not want them either.
