Jemilah Abdullahi started this petition to Minister of women affairs (Federal Ministry of Women Affairs) and

After my parent's divorce when I was at a tender age, my mum took over almost all financial responsibilities of myself and my 3 other siblings.

To me, that wasn't right. I knew it wasn't normal for a father to leave his "RESPONSIBILITY" to a mother to shoulder all alone.

I was determined to make things better so I did all I could in my own rebellious ways to make him pay my school fees at regular intervals, this I barely succeeded but a few times.

The family responsibility is generally believed to be a father's duty in a home. Women on the other hand are meant to have children, raise them aright and take care of the entire family.

With my mum and other single mothers (divorcees, widows, etc), their realities are different as they carry both responsibility of father and mother all alone.

I have asked myself severally what would have become of my siblings and I should my mum have been a lazy woman who had no job or knew nothing about business.

My mum was a civil servant and I watched her grow into a senior civil servant while still using her minor skills of cooking and making snacks as well as selling to make some extra money on the side.

She was and is still my role model, I learnt that women too are powerful and can do anything just like men from her experience. So I grew up wanting to be a rich woman and not wanting to marry a rich man.

As a grown up, I've met women who, like my mum (and myself of course), are bent on making ends meet and gaining their own financial independence with or without the support of anyone.

On the other hand, I have also met some women who are comfortable with being totally dependent on their spouses, parents or relatives for their financial fate.

These women are of two categories: the first don't belief it's easy or possible for them so they simply flow with the tide and spend their days and nights praying that their helpers never die.

The second category of women however, are the type that truly want to do something but are constrained by lack of ideas, funding, support or worse still, by a spouse who would never let them work or do anything productive.

These two categories of women need help. Somehow a vast majority of these women are in abusive marriages but can't seem to make any move or change anything because the threat of divorce and poverty lurks them in the eye.

On my own, I have tried in many ways to advocate for the need for financial independence and thousands of women have started something because they heard or read from me.

However, I know there is more to be done especially with regards to the women at the grassroots who have no access to the internet and the information therein.

These women are sitting on time bombs that can blow up at any time. In most cases, they all pray not to be widowed early but there are so many reasons why a woman will need financial independence and her confidence is one of such reasons.

Therefore, I am writing this petition to the federal ministry of women affairs and the federal ministry of finance to allocate an annual budget that focuses on women's financial empowerment before international women's day 2022.

With proper enlightenment, empowerment and support, more women will be able to embrace a good means of livelihood and reduce the poverty rate in the country because when a woman is empowered, she empowers her entire household.

I hereby call on you my dear friends and well wishers to please lend me your voice by signing and sharing this petition till it gets to the appropriate authorities and our ask is granted.

It is possible for Nigerian women to also be financially capable just like the men. Nothing stops us from getting the kind of wealth that makes men want to sleep with widows before helping them. We're one petition away from victory, would you please join us? Thank you.
