Restore Original Sailing Times for the Kootenay Lake Ferry

Dear Mr. Lekstrom,
It is imperative to have our ferry service restored. As a small community we rely on the proximity of larger towns and cities to sustain our quality of life. the residents of the Eastshore (Crawford Bay, Riondel, Kootenay Bay, Gray Creek, Boswell) access municipalities such as Nelson, Castlegar, Kaslo etc. for shopping, food, health, i.e. doctors, dentists, hospitals, etc. employment, entertainment, transportation i.e. buses, air flight and recreation. We are dependent on these communities for many aspects of our lives and reduced ferry sailings have impeded our way of life. It is our urgent request to restore our ferry service to its original sailings (commuter sailing at 6:05am and a night sailing at 1:10am with ferry sailing on the hour). Access and travel via the ferry is a crucial link across Kootenay Lake for the following reasons:
- Health - extended ambulance service hours to our regional hospital and extended hours to be able to visit friends and family in hospital.
- Economic Viability - Increased tourist traffic vital for our small businesses as well as enticing workers to the Eastshore.
- Social Development - providing more opportunities for our residents to participate in more cultural, recreational and educational experiences. To provide our children with greater access to services such as youth centers, libraries, cultural events, sports, etc.
-Work Opportunities- an early morning commuter ferry would ensure more opportunities for residents to obtain employment off the Eastshore and still be able to reside on the Eastshore.
- Shopping - most to all household expenditures on the Eastshore such as groceries, clothing, household goods, building supplies, etc. are purchased in communties such as Nelson. Earlier and later sailings will ease this burden.
An hourly schedule in the summer and a two hour schedule in the winter will ensure there is no cost overuns. The ferry will be able to slow down going across the lake decreasing fuel costs and offset any costs for crew wages.
Thank you for your time in this manner and the Eastshore residents are prepared to fight for this right.
