This fall, 2017, Parks Canada plans to ban all parking on the Sunshine Access Road.
YOU CAN CHANGE THIS DECISION.
For over four decades, Albertans, Canadians and international visitors of Banff National Park, have been parking in coordinated safe zones on the Sunshine Access Road.
In an unexpected move, Parks Canada has decided to eliminate all Access Road parking for 2017 without offering any viable parking alternatives. This means the elimination of hundreds of visitor parking spots.
Over the past years, Sunshine Village and their expert consultants have worked hard to come up with a better solution to parking on the road.
Engineers have developed 7 new parking lot options along the Access Road built within non-designated wilderness areas that would accommodate Park visitors. One or more of these options would provide a viable alternative to Access Road parking. Additionally, Sunshine has proposed several parking expansion designs adjacent the existing parking lot. The new parking lots have all been specifically designed with environmental and safety concerns that mindfully reflect the values of Canadian National Parks.
All of these plans have been declined by Parks Canada, which has indicated that it has no interest in working with Sunshine to create a viable solutions for its visitors. As a Parks Canada passholder and a Canadian Citizen, we know you value accessibility to all areas of your park.
Banff National Park has been designated, created and protected for all Canadians to enjoy and experience in a safe, fair, and accessible manner.
If you value accessibility in your National Park, please make your voice heard. Write and/or call your federal government representatives.
