Petition to Benoit Charette,

Everyone dies at some point in his or her life; this is a sad inevitable fact. What is not inevitable is how fast our planet is warming and our species disappearing. Climate change is affecting us all now and will affect the future for our kids if we don't find more natural and efficient ways to live our current lives and pass on into the afterlife. When we plan our funeral we are indirectly planning our planets funerals as well, for example, our coffins are made of wood which comes from trees or some will choose to be cremated which emits approximately 535 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere, meaning neither of these traditional options is great for keeping our planet alive.

According to The Paris Agreement in 2015, we need to aim for a global average temperature increase of below 2°C, with the ultimate goal of limiting the rise to only 1.5°C by 2030, in order to avoid the most catastrophic damage from climate change. For this to happen we need to reduce the amount of green house gases that are emitted into the world globally or help the planet better absorb these gases. A very popular way to help reduce climate change is to plant trees and protect them. Trees provide oxygen for us to survive; they are also a natural carbon sink that absorbs the CO2 that pollutes our atmosphere.

We, the undersigned citizens of the Province of Quebec, call upon the Minister of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, Mr. Benoit Charette, to protect forests across the province and allow them to be used as a cemetery with green burials. As of right now we only have 2 green burial cemeteries (Sentiers Commémoratifs de la Rivière & Cimetière Catholique Granby) in the entire province and only 1 cemetery (Coopérative funéraire de l'Estrie) that has a natural forest as a cemetery.  These protected forests should be allowed to have new trees planted and for as long as the area can accommodate. This petition is asking that the province of Quebec pushes to have more green burials, which allow our bodies to decompose naturally into the soil, as well as being allowed to have a tree planted in our honour and lastly, to have our ashes used as fertilizer for a protected forest.

What if instead of walking through a grey tombstone-filled cemetery you could walk through a beautiful green forest to remember your loved ones, wouldn't this make you feel a little less sad and a little more at peace? All over our beautiful province there should be protected lands in which trees can be planted for the lives lost in order to reduce the effects of climate change and deforestation.

Please sign this petition if you would like to help save the planet and change the traditional ways of funerals.
