Raghunathan Varun started this petition to Minister of Road Transport & Highways

The Government of India recently passed the Motor Vehicle Act — which slaps heavy fines for traffic violations. People have been charged more than 30,000 rupees for traffic violations.

I agree that we do need stricter laws and people must follow traffic rules. However, the government has increased the fines manifold but the infrastructure is still poor in most cities.

Many motorists have died due to poor condition of roads. The roads are clogged and flooded the moment it starts raining. There are potholes every few meters. This is the state of most roads in India. Over 9000 people have died and more than 25000 have been injured in the last 3 years due to potholes.

There is no coordination between various departments such as electricity, sewage or metro water. Newly laid roads are dug up immediately citing some issue or the other.

The government must put together an action plan to immediately address these concerns.

  • The government must provide good quality of roads
  • There should be coordination between the different departments and roads should not be dug up as and when they please
  • Fines collected must be reduced if the roads are not of proper quality
  • In case of accidents due to poor quality of roads, the government must adequately compensate the victim.
