Indian Railways, the public-funded sector, is a true pride of India and her citizens. Indian Railways is an integral part of millions of Indians everyday. This petition requests to re-license  general content of Indian Railways websites' under public domain license or other free licenses (such as Creative Commons, please also see "Notes" section below).

Indian Railway websites have a lot of useful images, media, and documents. However all the websites are copyrighted. If the non-confidential documents are re-licensed, it will be extremely helpful for others such as educational institutions, researchers, newspapers and media, encyclopedia like Wikipedia, to use these for educational and similar purpose. Currently this is not possible as access is protected by copyright, and it actually is problematic.

Re-licensing won't only enable access for the people, it will also increase reach of those content by many times (as newspapers, encyclopedia like Wikipedia has a huge reach).

Websites and content (partially or fully, see "Note" below) of these websites are requested to be re-licensed under public domain or free licenses:

  1. http://www.indianrail.gov.in
  2. http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/
  3. https://www.irctc.co.in/
  4. http://www.irctctourism.com/

Indian Railways are relentlessly working on their digital presence and activities, and other than online ticket booking, Railways' Twitter or other social channels are reliable options to learn information, and contact Indian Railways. I hope, this request of giving access to knowledge will be considered by the officials.

Note: This petition does not request to re-license or publish any confidential or otherwise important documents and data (such as internal documents, passengers' data etc.). This petition seeks access to general documents and media files.
