A Teenage Rape victim has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, because her baby was still born. Even though no medical experts could ascertain that the baby died in utero or after the delivery both are punishable. Judges are now deciding if her mother will be held accountable for this also. Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz, 19, will be starting her 30 year sentence for loosing a baby - (still born), that was conceived through multiple gang rape. In El Salvador Women are jailed without direct proof or sufficient evidence of an actual crime committed.
El Salvador has some of the worst, restrictive laws on women's reproduction. A small committee decided in 1997 to strip women of their reproductive rights, without any public debate, or any medical consultation on the affects.
Evelyn sadly is not the first to be sentenced, Large numbers of women are serving sentences for miscarrying, or still birthing a baby. 17 women are currently being held and sentenced on pregnancy related complications in birth.
"Women that go to hospital with pregnancy related bleeding are being handcuffed to the bed."
"An extremely high percentage of the women that are prosecuted are poor, they do not have access to medical facilities or education. "
We we want to make Change happen, please support us by signing this petition, We want to stop the unfair sentences and criminalisation for women who miscarry and have still born pregnancy.
Imagine being sentenced for murder if you miscarried?
