We are concerned Canadians and people from around the world who want to bring to your attention the case of MUBARAK BALA.

Mr. Bala is a Nigerian citizen who was arrested on April 28, 2020, for blasphemy. He is President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria. Mr. Bala allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad in his Facebook posts, and authorities claimed that his posts would incite the Muslim community and lead to public disturbance. Per the Nigerian Constitution, Mr. Bala should have been informed of the charges against him. This has not happened in the nine months he has been in jail.

On December 10, 2020, a Judge ruled Mubarak's imprisonment as wrongful and demanded his release, which has not occurred.

We are deeply concerned about Mubarak Bala. He has only met with his lawyers once in nine months, and there have been persistent threats to his life. These threats include promises from the public to kill him if he is released.

We are asking you to provide immediate entry for Mubarak, his wife and child to Canada in hopes that this will facilitate his release from prison. His life is clearly in danger both in the hands of the police in Kano and in the community. He has not been charged with any criminal offences yet remains in jail. His continued imprisonment is a violation of fundamental human rights and has been reported on by media worldwide.

Sincerely,

International Association of Atheists, Centre for Inquiry Canada, Canadian atheists, Humanist Canada, and the undersigned.
