Update: August 20 High Court accepts CCF’s plea!

Thank you for signing the petition we started two weeks ago. Like us, the High Court, concerned about statements in the news surrounding the demolition of Kala Academy, took Suo Moto cognisance and called for a hearing on August 19.

Yesterday, at the hearing, a representation from the Charles Correa Foundation was accepted by the Court, and the State Advocate General filed an affidavit stating that the State has called for an independent structural audit of the building. The audit report is due on September 7. The State has also put on record that it will not contemplate demolition of Kala Academy until the report is received and studied.

We have been asked to file an affidavit with evidence to supplement the case for preservation of Kala Academy by September 2, and the High Court has scheduled the next hearing on September 9. Based on the audit report, the concerned parties would be able to plead to take further action.

In order to supplement the case for repair and conservation of the Kala Academy, we will be keeping this petition active until the next court hearing. On behalf of the Charles Correa Foundation we intend to build greater public consensus on the cultural, artistic and architectural value of the Kala Academy to Goa.

If you feel strongly about the Kala Academy, could you send in a statement of support - as a local resident, artist (visual, theatre, music etc.), or even share a memory of the place? Please email the Foundation at It would be much appreciated. Do share with us why you feel that the building is important and should be restored.

And thank you for signing the petition. Let's keep working to save Kala Academy!
